A sparkling Christmas in Marunouchi (Tokyo) with a Harry Potter theme
It is the illumination season, also known as the season of sparkling LED lights, in Japan now. The place I went to/ recommend today is Marunouchi, which is decorated with a Harry Potter Christmas theme at Tokyo Station.
1/ How to get there
To get to Marunouchi, you just need to get off at Tokyo Station. Then, exit the station at the north gate, go straight through the park in front, and you will immediately see Marunouchi Street. The street is so bright that it is easy to see.
2/ Maurunouchi Street Park
Like every year, in Marunouchi, a whole street is lit up, called Marunouchi street park. There are sparkling trees along the road that brighten it all up. On both sides of the sidewalk, there are shops selling Christmas decorations, clothes, and accessories that are meticulously decorated.
In the middle of the streets, there are things to experience, such as tents, giant chess boards, billiard tables, food stalls, and heated sofas to warm up those who find the road too cold.
3/ HARRY POTTER-themed Christmas trees
This year is even more remarkable since the illumination in Marunouchi is held with a Harry Potter theme to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first movie, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone".
I wonder if there is a fan here since I'm a big fan. I read all the books and watched all the movies. When I was in Vietnam, I also visited a Harry Potter-themed cafe and absolutely loved it. Therefore, when I knew Marunouchi would have a collab with Harry Potter, I immediately came to visit.
To be more specific, there will be 4 Harry Potter-related spots (Don't forget to check-in in all these spots). Also, the Harry Potter theme only lasts from now to the end of December 25th.
A. Tree of Hogwarts magic
The tree of Hogwarts magic is 9 meters tall and is placed on the 1st floor of the Marunouchi Building.
The tree is decorated with a Hogwarts theme with dangling sparkling candles. There are flags of 4 houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff all around it.
Next to the Hogwarts tree is a souvenir stall with limited edition Harry Potter-related items.
Besides, from 5 PM to 9 PM, every 15 minutes, there will be a 3D light show on the Harry Potter theme music at the Hogwarts Magic tree. The performance is almost continuous, so you just need to wait a bit to see it, and don't worry if you miss it.
B. Tree of Owl Post
The second spot is located outside of Tokyo Torch Park. The Tree of Owl Post is about 30 meters high and made from brilliant Christmas lights. The tree will be lit up at about 3 PM, the music of Hedwig's theme will be played next to the tree, presenting a bold "owl" theme.
The tree is so tall that I had to stand from afar to see the whole of it.
C. Tree of Hogwarts Letters
Leaving the second spot, I wandered around the Marunouchi Brick Square and saw the Tree of Hogwarts Letters.
Inspired by the scene in the movie when Harry receives a series of letters of acceptance to Hogwarts, the tree is meticulously lit with countless letters bearing the Hogwarts mark inside. Above the tree is the familiar Hedwig owl with Hedwig's theme music being played.
Moreover, these letters are all about Harry's admission to Hogwarts (in English). It would be great if I got accepted to Hogwarts too.
D. Tree of Fantastic Beasts
Last but not least, the Tree of Fantastic Beasts, which is placed on the 1st floor of the Marunouchi Oazo building.
Unlike the three trees mentioned above, the Tree of Fantastic Beasts is inspired by the book Fantastic Beasts. It looks like it was cut out from a book page with floating books above. There is a massive Fantastic Beasts book in front of the Tree of Fantastic Beasts, and you can sit on that book to take pictures.
In short, it took me about two hours to get to Marunouchi Street and visit the four Harry Potter spots.
If you want, you should follow this route to avoid having to walk too much:
- Marunouchi Street Park
- Tree of Hogwarts Letters (located on one corner of Marunouchi Street Park)
- Tree of Hogwarts magic
- Tree of Owl Post
- Tree of Fantastic Beasts
The Tree of Fantastic Beasts is next to Tokyo Station, so after coming here, I could go straight to the station and put an end to a shimmering and sparkling evening.
