Admire Japan's greatest fireworks festival - OMAGARI HANABI
The fireworks festival is a major and important festival in Japanese culture. In particular, the Omagari Festival in Akita is considered the greatest because it is not only a regular fireworks festival but also the National Fireworks Festival. Let's find out about this unique fireworks festival!
History of fireworks in Japan
Fireworks have a long history of formation. It originated from China and was introduced to Japan around the 15th century, at the same time as gunpowder. Over time, Japan has proven that although the fireworks started in China, Japan is a country with unique fireworks techniques. It is also the hometown of many world-famous fireworks artists.
The fireworks festival was first held in Japan in 1733. According to history, the whole country suffered from terrible famine and disease that caused 900,000 deaths in the previous year
The government decided to hold a fireworks festival in the summer with the hope of relieving the ill-fated souls and dispelling the raging plague. Since then, the Japanese people consider fireworks a blessing with the probability of eliminating lousy luck, bringing good luck and excitement to people's lives.
Today, fireworks festivals are still maintained throughout cities across the country as a distinctive traditional culture. And the Omagari Hanabi Akita fireworks festival is considered the most significant festival, attracting the most prominent participants.
Omagari Hanabi Matsuri Festival
The Omagari Hanabi Fireworks Festival is held annually on the last Saturday of August, on the banks of the Omono River, Daisen City in Aikita Prefecture. This is a contest for fireworks artists from all over the country to compete, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to enjoy.
On the day of the festival, although the performance is in the evening, visitors will gather at the site from the afternoon to choose a nice seat or location to watch the fireworks. Everyone will bring items such as mats, fans, Yukata, beer… to enjoy the fireworks ^^
Unique firework performances explode in the shimmering and fanciful night sky. You would be lucky if you find a nice seat to enjoy the entire performance of these amazing fireworks.
Each performance had a different meaningful theme. I didn't know much about the theme, so I could only take multiple pictures.
What makes me happy when participating in this festival is that I could live the moments with everyone here, regardless of age, status, nationality. We all admired the fireworks together, cheered, and created a lively atmosphere in the national festival.
And for the first time, I saw a vibrant Japan, with no distance between people. If given a chance, would you want to wear a Yukata to a fireworks show in Japan for once?!
