I lived in Kyoto for almost one year and a half, during my master's program! My apartment was in the Ryoan-Ji area (literally in front of this incredible patrimony of Japan). Like many of you, I tried to visit as much as I could!

Kyoto is well known for its numerous temples and traditional streets. But have you visited its natural side? The city is surrounded by many mountains and water zones! You don't need special equipment to enjoy much of this.

After I met my Japanese boyfriend (current husband), we started dating and going around Kyoto. One day we were walking and looking for a place to have a picnic, and we ended up in Takao.

Takao is a village in the north of Kyoto, full of nature and famous for some temples, Jingoji, Kozanji, Saimyoji. Similarly, this zone has a good hiking trail and traditional restaurants around. We discovered its main river, Kiyotaki (清滝川).

Close to the basin, people can seat and have a picnic. The day that I visited, there were some families around, even with the summer heat. We ate lunch and soon after did some part of the hiking trail.

If you are interested in this area and would like to visit the river and one of its ancient temples - Jingoji. you can ride a city bus from Kyoto station or other bus stops. Also, the JR bus covers this area! Don't miss this chance and enjoy this rural side of the city!

The second place I introduce is Hirosawa Pond (広沢池). It is a quiet place located near Arashiyama. Although being small, there are various trees and even cherry blossoms! During my visit, I had another picnic too, for a longer time!

You can visit this place taking some buses and walking for a short distance, all of them come from Ryoan-Ji. In my case, I went by bicycle! This is an option to consider, and there are several alternatives to rent them, paying less than 1000 yen.

The last place of this article was completely hidden, and I ended there by accident. It is called Hanada Ike (花田池). This is a pond really close to Ryoan-Ji. Walking on the Kinukake Road (きぬかけの路), you can find a small entrance to this area.

In my case, as I mentioned, I arrived by accident, but my visit was pleasant. Again, this is a place perfect for a picnic, but a little muddier.

If you walk a little more, you can join the hike for the mountain. Even if this area is uncommon there is a clear path inside. At the top, you can appreciate the city view!

This place is a gem, but be cautious to not lose your way going down. If you prefer, just go by the pond and see the surrounding architecture.

Here my article ends, with three different places that perhaps you did not know. Kyoto is an amazing city and one offering you contrast! Try to visit one of these places and share your impressions here!
