What is Hitachi Seaside Park?

The Hitachi Seaside Park (also called Hitachi kaihin koen) is located in Hitachinaka city, Ibaraki provincial (northeast of Tokyo). From Tokyo, it only takes around 1h30' to travel to the park.

At the park, you can see hundreds of flower varieties blooming all year round. Some famous names include nemophila and tulip in spring, green kochia and sunflower in summer, red kochia and cosmos in fall, plum blossom and rape blossom in winter.

What to do here?

You can enjoy the refreshing atmosphere of this windy seaside national park, or admire the garden with hundreds of flowers. The flowers are meticulously cared for and get changed regularly to ensure their brilliance and freshness.

Many tourists, both Japanese and foreigners, come here for flower-viewing, taking a stroll and enjoying the fresh seaside breeze. You can even bring your pet here. I have seen many puppies frolicking around at the park.

There are many big events being organized at the park. Not just nature-themed events, there are also big sport and culture events. Most notable among them are the light up events organized at night and the biggest summer rock event in Japan being organized annually here.

Unfortunately, I couldn't experience the light up event since I came during the day. But next time, I will definitely join the event and take many pictures to show you.

Overwhelmed by the red Kochia

I went to Hitachi Seaside park in late October, the time when buckwheat flowers and cosmos were in full bloom. Like many other tourists, my main goal was to find red kochia - the park's "queen of autumn".

August and September are the time when green kochia is planted here. We can only see the green kochia in around one month since the kochia leaves will change their color when autumn comes. From October, you will be surprises to see the kochia muse adorned in her gorgeous, elegant crimson gown.

Unfortunately, there was a huge storm in Ibaraki the day before I came here, and many flowers were broken off. But even from afar, I could see the attractive bright red kochia. I was so excited at that time without knowing why, something urged me to run to that kochia field as quickly as possible, like a child running toward a new toy.

There is a big bell on top of the hill, where everyone come to ring and pray for health and peace for their family and themselves. From the foot of the hill, I could hear the continuous tolls of the bell.

Then I had a thought, so many people must have waited a long time for their turn to ring the bell. I was also among them, and climbed all the way to the top and rung that bell. Hopefully my prayers will be answered one day.

After having your fill with with flower-viewing, you can rest at the long benches that face the sea, where the sea breeze is flowing in. From here, we enjoyed the refreshing sea breeze, and even leisurely gazed upon the endless ocean and the busy, crowded harbor from afar.

I will definitely come here many times again!

I highly recommend the Hitachi Seaside park as one of the must-visit destination in the Kanto region. You don't have to worry about when to visit, and what to do here, since the park is beautiful all year round with many flowers being meticulously cared for by the staff here.

If I have the chance, I would come here again many times to see the marvelous transition of nature in different seasons.
