Dotonbori by night
Another interesting place in the middle of Osaka - Dotonbori. This isn’t only a Japanese famous place, it’s also a destination you shouldn’t miss when visiting Osaka. And for me, Dotonbori is most beautiful at night ...
I had a trip to Osaka on Christmas 2018. From Fukuoka to Osaka I needed about 15 hours by high-speed bus. Going by plane or boat, as Christmas is a big festival in Japan, would cost much more than usual, about 2 to 3 times more than on normal days. High-speed buses in Japan run smoothly and extremely safely although running in the middle of the night. I could sleep during the whole trip in the big and comfortable bus seat. I stayed in Osaka for 4 days. I went to Dotonbori on the first morning I arrived in Osaka, but there was nothing special. Only a calm river running along a small and quiet street. I was a bit surprised, because I had researched about Dotonbori on many websites before, on which it was described as busy and very crowded. Ignoring the doubts I had, I decided to come here again to convince myself, but this time in the evening when the streets in Osaka are ready to light up. And it’s true, Dotonbori is really flashy and overwhelming. Osaka didn’t disappoint me.
Dotonbori - a small district along Osaka's Dotonbori River - is like a paradise at night with shiny street lights, colorful lights coming from restaurants, clubs, amusement parks and shops. People come here to eat and have fun, as if there's a big party going on. We are very happy that we could experience the busy atmosphere, listen to the music of funny musicians singing on the sidewalk, eat delicious food and take a lot of beautiful photos.
When talking about food, there are countless in Dotonbori, but the prices are very affordable. Maybe some hundred yen, because it’s a tourist place. The aromatic takoyaki (grilled octopus cakes) - the signature dish of Osaka city, the skewers of seafood on the steamy fire stove, for which people stand in long lines, or Okonomiyaki, a famous Japanese pancake...
We bought two pieces of Takoyaki and seafood skewers to eat, drank a few cans of beer and sat on the sidewalk of Shinsaibashi - a large shopping street which is 600m long with lots of fashion, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and food shops - and that was wonderful during the freezing cold winter weather in Osaka! And here is a little tip for you if you plan to explore Dotonbori: Don’t eat too much before going there, so you can enjoy the specialties.
Besides the abundant choices of food, Dotonbori also has many beautiful scenes. I immersed myself in the winter scenery of this extremely brightly lit area, spending half an hour taking countless photos. Each corner of Dotonbori has its own unique beauty. All of you who come here and love to take photos don’t need to worry about not having photos to bring back. Pictures of the famous "candy factory" Glico with the giant sign, the landmark of Osaka, which is the most visited place by tourists in Dotonbori or the poetic river in the middle of the city with beautiful small boats carrying passengers along the river every night...
I didn't get the chance to see the Dotonbori life by boat because it was so crowded and I also wanted to spend my time walking and enjoying the atmosphere and food here. I am really impressed by the beauty of Dotonbori at night, it’s flashy and busy but it still keeps the elegance of Japan.
You have to see Dotonbori at night with your own eyes, immerse yourself in the flow of people on the busy street to fully understand its beauty and brilliance. We watched Dotonbori for a long time and came home in the middle of the night when the laughter and invitations of people faded.
