I came to know about the outdoor photography services (Location Photography), also known in Japanese as 出張撮影、ロケーション撮影 when researching for my wedding photo album. During the trip to Otaru, Hokkaido, since I was so in love with the unique ancient beauty of this port city, I decided to hire a photographer to take the best photos of the two of us.

After researching for a while, I found Our Photo, a website that specializes in connecting photographers and people who want to have their pictures taken professionally. After creating an account, you can connect and talk directly with the photographer you like.

A great thing about this website is that you can chat with the photographer via email without having to log in multiple times to the web system. Our photo also introduced us to many photographers, from amateurs, freelancers to professional photographers of photo salons.

If you prefer freelance photographers, they usually work on weekends, so the price is low, only from ¥8,800 (equivalent to about 1 million 800 thousand VND). However, there will be no support for accessories, costumes, hairdressing, makeup if you need it (depending on the photographer).

On the contrary, if you want to hire photographers from those local studios, there will be additional packages to choose from costumes and makeup. Furthermore, it is possible for you to change the location of the photoshoot from outdoor to their indoor studio if the weather is bad.

Some tips to help you find a "helpful photographer"

1- Photographers or photo studios often leave their Instagram account or the homepage of the Studio, so please check there first to learn about the shooting style, how they edit photos through photos of the previous clients.

(Each photographer has a unique style and tendency of editing photos. Finding a photographer with the right style that you are aiming for your theme is already a 60%~70% boost for a successful photoshoot session.)

2- If you are knowledgeable about cameras, then carefully look at the information about the camera, the types of lenses that the photographer will use.

3- Remember to check out the comments and reviews on Our Photo and other comment sites if available. There can be a lot of useful information that the photographer/studio doesn't cover.

4- For a fair evaluation: compare the price and number of photos received with other photographers and photo studios.

5- Please also check the photographer's operating area because if it's too far away, it will incur a very high travel fee.

Besides Our Photo, the Japanese market also has many other websites connecting clients with photographers such as:

The service is not limited to couples and wedding photoshoots. Family photos, pregnancy photos, new-born photos, birthday photos are also provided for people of many ages. If you are afraid of your ability to communicate in Japanese, then rest assured because there are currently many Vietnamese photo studios doing business in Japan that you could easily contact.

My photography experiences

In the end, I chose a local store called Luana Photo and ordered a single session (usually 50 minutes) for ¥8,800.

In addition to the above-mentioned fee, which is pre-paid through Our Photo's system, parking fees or entrance tickets should be paid, if applicable. Usually, photographers will produce 30 photos or more for a single session, but you can get 10-20 more photos if you follow the photo store/photographer's SNS channels or you could just spend money to buy more photos.

Regarding costumes, because Luana Photo store only offers wedding dresses, evening dresses, and kimonos for rent for women, there are no clothes for men, so I decided to use "homemade" costumes.

My husband’s suit is a daily-worn suit for work, my "Ao Dai" was also bought at an Ao Dai store in Vietnam. I just put on light makeup, but honestly, just wearing a traditional Ao Dai will make you stand out and look super attractive wherever you go.

We walked around the street and were able to get lots of natural shots. After each pose, the photographer exclaimed with joy as she captured many beautiful moments for the two of us. I think I've been lucky enough to find a passionate photo studio to help me save the memories of that Hokkaido trip.

I hope this could help you to find a way to have many emotional photos and memories during each trip!
