Having quite the reputation for serving exceptionally delicious breakfast, Kissa Mumumu (喫茶ムムム) is a well-tucked coffee shop, strategically located within the Beppu train station.

Location

Trust me when I say it is "well tucked", I have been strolling around Beppu station a lot recently, and never have I accidentally come across this coffee shop.

Nevertheless, it was just a brief 5-minute walk from the station. You'll probably notice the coffee shop straight away if you pass by just because it has a different feel compared to other Japanese coffee shops!

Space

My first impression of this cafe was that it is such a cozy spot to spend the afternoon, especially if it's raining.

Right from when I walked in, I was greeted with warm yellow lights that gave off such pleasant vibes. I loved the way that the hosts opted for yellow-tinted lights instead of the fluorescent while ones to go with the wooden interior. Despite being here for the first time, I could already spot my favorite corner!

Kissa Mumumu is a small, yet homey coffee shop

I realized that there were only three sitting areas to the left of the shop (maybe they rearranged the seating to practice social distancing). However, they have a bar sitting concept, which I think is quite different from your regular coffee shops.

The bar setting allows you to see the hosts while they are preparing your drinks and meals. If you happen to come alone, this may be the better seating option for you, as you get to see your orders being prepared and leave the tables for other larger groups of customers.

Truthfully, I've read a handful of positive reviews about this coffee shop on the internet and how delicious their breakfast menu is. I unintentionally decided to visit this coffee shop one afternoon and unfortunately, I was a tad late for breakfast. But they offer a great deal too for lunch.

The lunch set menu cost me 900 yen for a choice of one pasta, omurice or sandwich, a side salad, and a drink. If you’re not up for the set, you can choose a la carte which will cost you 750 yen.

Some may say this coffee shop has a limited variety of food to choose from, but honestly, I think the options were okay. Anyways, if you prefer something to snack on instead, they also have desserts and quite an extensive option for drinks.

A fellow coffee lover told me the coffee here is rather nice too, so if you're into coffee, do order yourself a cup!

Nevertheless, whether you're up for a big bite or not, Kissa Mumumu got you covered.

What do you guys think - are the options too limited?

This small coffee shop has all my boxes ticked, they surely did a marvelous job creating an inviting feel for its customers and it is sure worth a visit. I may or may not have already planned my next visit!
