Lunch At Kamakura: Tonkatsu Komachi とんかつ小満ち

Reasonable and absolutely delicious! One of the best tonkatsu I ever had.

The nearest station to Tonkatsu Komachi とんかつ小満ち is Kamakura Station. It is less than 200m away from the West Exit. Kamakura Station has the Yokosuka Line and Shonan Shinjuku Line both on the JR Line.

My friend and I were craving for meat and we walked past this tonkatsu (breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet) shop while strolling along Komachi Street in Kamakura. We saw other interesting shops but we decided to go for this because we saw that it was run by a family, which in our opinion will definitely be yummy.

Even from the outside, the display already look so appetizing that we immediately felt drawn to it. The name of the shop, 小満ち is pronounced as komachi and is a play of word from the street name, 小町 which is also pronounced as komachi.

満ち translates to full/ fulfilling/ satiated and the in front can be translated as a little. So my take of this shop name is that we can be a little satiated with the amazing food this restaurant offers.

The shop opens at 11:30 AM and we went slightly after that and even then, it was already pretty full even though we went on a weekday at the end of November 2021. I'm guessing most of them are locals.

The staff brought us our tea and these three items. When she brought the brown tonkatsu sauce, pickles and chopsticks, she told us that that the two other sauces on the table were Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce.

For the pickles, I preferred the yellow ones more than the white ones. The yellow one is a little sour but the crunch was really good. There was a slightly strange smell I wasn't used to in the white pickles but it wasn't terrible or anything.

The miso soup was a-m-a-z-i-n-g. The deep flavours along with the stuff in the soup were so generous. Every slurp had some veggie in it and wasn't just a watery substance. It had a very homey feeling to it, just like how grandma would make it.

Both my friend and I went for the 90g Tonkatsu Set. The cabbage was freshly sliced. It was juicy and crisp. You can literally taste the freshness in every bite. The potato salad on the side was absolutely wonderful. The texture of the potato was something new to me. It was almost cream-like.

There were bits of cucumber and carrots in it as well, making the entire thing refreshing and accenting every flavor.

Look at how thin the breadcrumbs layer is. There was a perfect balance of fat and lean meat making every bite absolutely delicious. Even though it was oily, it was a delicious kind of oily. It was the perfect comfort food for winter. The meat was juicy and tender. It was such a good texture that I was really impressed.

The rice was of good quality as well and is refillable if you want. There is another menu of 130g of tonkatsu but as Komachi Street has MANY other things that you might want to eat, 90g is just nice.

Overall, I give it a 4.5/5. Location-wise is convenient and it is very easy to locate. The staffs are lovely and polite. The food is reasonable and absolutely heavenly. Even the toilet is super clean. There is nothing to complain about. There is room for 0.5 points because I want to try the other things on their menu.

If you ever go Kamakura, I highly recommend you to try this restaurant out.
