The pet button is popping up in more elevators, especially in newer apartment buildings. But what is it for?

This is a very useful button that will usually be seen in buildings that allow pets. Pet friendly apartment buildings are sometimes hard to find in Tokyo, but luckily for pet owners, they are becoming more common.

Pets in Japan are quite expensive and are often seen as a status symbol.

Having a dog means you have the money to live in a pet friendly building, you have the time to take the dog for walks or you have the money to pay someone to do it for you.

Of course, when it comes to dogs, smaller ones are more popular in Japan, especially in big cities like Tokyo and Osaka. This is mainly due to the fact that apartments and houses tend to be quite small making them great for small dog breeds.

So now, back to the pet button. The pet button is pushed when the elevator user is riding the elevator with their pet (usually a dog).

It allows other riders who may be getting on the elevator, to be aware that there will be an animal in the elevator when it arrives at their floor.

This has a couple of great benefits not only for the dog and dog owners, but also for other tenants or visitors to the apartment building.

It is great for people with a fear of animals or allergies. They can now avoid a potentially bad situation and take the stairs, or walk away for a couple minutes while the pet clears out.

The pet button is excellent for others with pets that may not get along with other animals very well. Maybe you have a friendly dog, but that dog doesn’t really like other dogs much. Now’s your opportunity to pick the dog up, or tighten your hold on the leash, so that the encounter with another strange animal goes over much more safely and calmly.

These days more and more things are being purchased online, which means many more delivery drivers going in and out of apartment buildings. The pet button is a very informative for delivery people who may have large boxes or carts and maybe can’t see that little chihuahua they are about to run over when they push their cart onto the elevator in a rush to get that delivery done.

So how does this button work?

Once the button inside the elevator is pushed, the panel outside the elevator door on each floor will light up with the word pet. Now everyone knows the button has been pushed. And that’s all! It’s a great addition to buildings that allow dogs and other animals.

We're sure to see more new buildings being built with pet buttons as they are an easy way to keep both animal and human residents of the building feeling safe and secure!
