Tea Time At Kamakura: まる天 Maruten
Best fried fishcake ever. It is cheap and good, making the perfect tea time snack!
I was SO happy when I found out まる天 Maruten was available in Komachi Street, Kamakura when I went at the end of November 2021. I've tried it once and only once a couple of years back and it was a taste that was so unforgettable.
My friend was a huge fan of them as well. So we knew we had to eat it even though we were still full from lunch.
The one that I went is located along Komachi Street. I think there is one more small booth down the street but the selection is not as much as this shop. The nearest station is Kamakura which is on the JR Line. Come out from the East Exit and just follow the crowd. I came out from West Exit and there was an underground passage. It's very easy to locate and you definitely won't get lost.
At the beginning of Komachi Street, you can already see the cute Totoro greeting you. There are plenty of souvenir shops along the way, ranging from food to even incense.
The weather was wonderful: sunny and the temperature was just nice.
However, if you are going out early in the morning or coming back late at night, I highly recommend you bring a thicker coat because temperatures will plummet like crazy. Especially because Kamakura is near the sea, the temperatures bounce a little more drastically than city temperatures.
Even without entering the shop, you can already smell the delicious oily scent. I don't know about you, but there is something really delicious and comforting about oily food, especially during the cold seasons. And Maruten is famous for their delicious fried fishcakes which is such a wonderful and delicious snack for tea time.
There were many choices. You can opt for the traditional round ones. Or you could go for the stick ones to avoid your hands from getting oily. There is even a rubbish bin in the shop where you can dispose the stick and the oily paper bag without having to bring it around.
I felt really spoilt for choice. Thankfully I had a friend with me so we could at least try two flavors. She went for the 海老マヨ棒 Ebi Mayo Stick.
Every bite was filled with such lovely flavors. The mayonnaise wasn't overbearing or too much. And it went so well with the bouncy fried fishcake. The prawns in it were real prawns and it was in it's entire form and not just bits and pieces of it. That alone makes it worth the price.
Can you guess what is mine?
It is the チーズ棒 Cheese Stick! Mine was very simple. It is literally a thick roll of melty cheese slotted in the middle of the fried fish cake. It was absolutely delicious. Nothing can go wrong with cheese.
While it was delicious, I also wished I went for something more Japanese-styled. Maybe I should've gone for the one with octopus bits. Or even the one with lotus root and red ginger. Everything looked so good. Perhaps next time when I get another opportunity.
Maruten has many stores nationwide but there is only one in Tokyo. If you are in other prefectures, you can check if there is one near you here. Most of the ones in the prefectures near Tokyo are in service areas, which is along the highway. So if you are not traveling by car, it's quite hard to visit the shop. Or you can also consider purchasing it online here.
