The ancient capital of Japan, Kyoto, is alluring and attractive because of not only the ancient and spiritual beauty of temples and shrines but also fascinating natural landscapes.

Among those places, we cannot forget to mention Amanohashidate - a nature-made bridge with a magical beauty, which has and is still becoming a new destination that can excite any Japan-loving hodophile. Let's join me in discovering this natural masterpiece!

The name Amanohashidate

Amanohashidate, located in a bay and north of the ancient capital Kyoto, is a 3,6-km long sandbar stretching across the Asokai Sea, with more than 7,000 pine trees planted in long rows and connecting the two sides of Miyazu Bay on the Tango peninsula.

This place is called Amanohashidate (The bridge to heaven) because when looking from afar, it looks like a bridge connecting the earth to the sky.

Legends about this site say that this is the road from the sea to the sky for the gods to travel between heaven and earth.

My personal experience for visiting Amanohashidate

Last summer, I had the chance to visit Kyoto with my family, and Amanohashidate was one place that I could not miss.

What in the world can compare with the chance to enjoy the sea breeze and the vast natural beauty when the weather was clear with shimmering summer sunshine.

I booked the train on the local railway line from Kyoto which only took me about 2 hours to get to Amanohashidate station. The moment I got off the train under the morning sun and the feeling when I held my loved one's hand and slowly walked along the sea-parting road were unforgettable.

After that, it was only a short walk towards the sea before I saw the bike rental place for sightseeing experiences. There were a long sandy beach imprinted with the footsteps of visitors who love Amanohashidate and a clear summer sky with clouds that seemed to be falling into the sea to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere that can only be found here.

My family decided to rent 2 bikes to explore and see the ground. It often takes 30 minutes to go from one side to the other side of Amanohashidate.

The faster the bike went, the more I could enjoy the full beauty of the "bridge to heaven". The Amanohashidate sandbar lying across the sea looked like the long and lustrous hair of a girl and was complimented by the harmonic combination with green pine rows and white sand.

After going on this sea-parting road to the other side, you will see Kasamatsu park - where you can have a full view of the Amanohashidate sandbar. The park is located on the slopes of Nariai-san mountain and has many observatories, such as the Sky desk, as well as many great places for you to take photos with the stunning views here.

My family chose the park's cable car service because we wanted to have a full view of this one-of-a-kind natural path. It only costs 680 yen/ person for a two-way trip by cable car. Looking down from above, Amanohashidate was majestic and magnificent and looked like a curving dragon flying straight up into the sky, creating a surreal and magical feeling.

If you have the chance to come here, try standing on the observatory, bending over, and looking through your legs. It will be a great experience to see the unique sight when heaven and earth are reversed.

The beauty of Amanohashidate is undeniable since it is one of Three Most Scenic Views in All of Japan. It is also a beautiful landscape of Japan that perhaps every Japanese-loving tourist wishes to visit once.

If you love traveling and exploring beautiful landscapes, you definitely have to experience the nature-made masterpiece of Amanohashidate to justify your love for nature.
