The unique experience that can only be found in Mombetsu - The city of ice
As a sequence of the journey of exploring the city of ice - Mombetsu, this time I will share with you impressive spots in this city to enliven your trip to Mombetsu and allow you to experience this place to the fullest.
In Mombetsu, one place in the must-see list is the unique Giza Ice Museum - also the biggest ice museum in Japan - where people study all aspects of the sea, sea ice, and unique marine creatures.
Giza Ice Museum
In Giza Ice Museum, there are answers to all questions about the sea and ice.
You can witness interesting things in a room with a temperature of -20 degrees Celsius, also known as frozen aquariums, where marine creatures kept in ice are displayed.
From small experiments explaining why the water in this area is frozen, watching water bubbles freeze right after blown out of the tube to the damp handkerchief hardens after just a few seconds or see the aquarium with vivid marine creatures. These things will surely attract visitors, especially children or those who are passionate about science ^^
This centre is the only place in Japan to raise Clione, the sea angel, which is extremely difficult to observe in the wild.
This creature is transparent and extremely small, only from 5 - 30mm long, and have slinky wings when moving. The most special thing about this creature is that Clione has such intense vitality that they can "go on a hunger strike" for a year and only live in extremely cold water.
Okhotsk Tokkari Center - The house of seals
The Sea of Okhotsk in Monbetsu is the house of seals. If you go by the Icebreaker Cruise Garinko, you will have the chance to enjoy an impromptu performance of seals off the coast of Okhotsk. Also, the Tokkari Center located at the seaport of Okhotsk is the place where seals are protected, nurtured, and cared for when they have any health problems.
Here, visitors can meet and see how one day of seals goes.
At different times during the day, visitors will participate in a special show of the seals, feed them, and approach them at the closest distance.
Seals are usually spotted in the Sea of Okhotsk, so this animal is chosen to be the mascot of Mombetsu city with a super cute name: Monta-kun.
Visitors can easily see Monta-kun everywhere, from the airport to souvenir shops like this.
Food in Mombetsu
It is obvious that the famous speciality of a coastal area should be seafood. Let's name all the must-try dishes in this place!
The crab here is believed to be the most delicious in Japan. The crab is big with thick, extremely fresh meat. Don't forget to try the snow crab hotpot!
The muscle is the most delicious and precious part of a scallop. This part is white, aromatic, soft, slightly chewy, and can be made into countless tasty dishes. Especially, scallop muscle here is also frozen and exported to many countries.
Salmon is popular and delicious, but also the most expensive sea fish in Japan. Fresh salmon roe is aromatic, sweet, and not fishy at all.
Despite being quite new to foreign visitors, Mombetsu is a destination for all ages and a place worth experiencing for those who love science, nature, and food, right? I highly recommend you guys to go in the winter because though the atmosphere looks gloomy and all snowy, for me, this place still has an unbelievable attractiveness.
Hopefully, with my little article, you will have a great experience here. See you again with other interesting destinations ^^.
