While burgers are not really part of Japanese cuisine, it is highly likely that you will find a restaurant that offers them no matter where you are in Japan, especially in the big city of Tokyo.

If you are like me and constantly on the lookout for a good, mouthwatering burger, you will not regret checking out this compilation of the best (non-fast food) burger shops in the area.

I have personally dined at each of these places at least three times, so you know they serve awesome food and are worth coming back to over and over again!

1. KUA`AINA

If you like avocados, bacon, and/or pineapples on your burger, then KUA`AINA is the place for you as they specialize in Hawaiian burgers.

Whenever I go here, I always order their pineapple burger because I love pineapples on everything! It has beef patty, grilled onion, pineapple, tomatoes, and lettuce. The lunch set comes with fries and a drink, while the dinner set comes with fries, onion rings, and a drink.

Aside from that, they have a lot of other options on their menu such as teriyaki burger, avocado burger, and of course, your basic hamburger and cheeseburger. They also have a variety of toppings you can add onto your burger. They also make you choose from three types of bread so you can definitely customize your burger to your liking.

As of writing, KUA`AINA has over 30 stores nationwide, with 10 in Tokyo alone.

2. Island Burgers

Another restaurant that offers pineapples on their burgers is Island Burgers.

Again, since I am a pineapple lover, I automatically choose something off their pineapple menu when I visit. My go-to is their pineapple bacon cheeseburger, as it contains all of the good stuff in it—lettuce, tomato, beef patty, pineapple, bacon, and cheese.

What makes their pineapple burgers special is that they all come with a sweet chili sauce that complements the sweetness and tartness of the pineapple. For sides, you get fries and a choice between salad or pickles. If you come during lunchtime, you also get a drink with your meal.

Other burgers they have include ones with their special barbecue sauce, avocado burgers, teriyaki burgers, and even tartar burgers. They also have topping options if you would like to personalize your burger.

Island Burgers currently only has two branches in the Shinjuku Ward of Tokyo: one in Yotsuya and another in Takadanobaba.

3. Umami Burger

Although this list is in no particular order, I saved the best (at least for me) for last. Umami Burger has got to be my favorite burger shop that you can find in Japan! Hailing from the U.S., they specialize in gourmet burgers, which they boast to have that unique "umami" (savory) flavor.

I order something different every time I come here so that I can try as many of their burgers as I can. Although out of everything I have tried so far, the most memorable one for me is their truffle burger, which has truffle aioli, beef patty, truffle cheese, and truffle glaze. Another menu item that I always make sure to order here is their tasty maple bacon fries—fried sweet potato fries covered in maple glaze and bacon. Yum!

Without a doubt, these three Tokyo burger shops are my absolute favorites based on food quality and cost. Until I find the next best burger, that is.
